Last Updated on Mon, 22 Jul Drawing the Human Body In a back view of a nude, the line created by the backbone can be used as an axis of symmetry, allowing us to balance the pose. A symmetrical composition presents greater stability and balance. In artistic drawing, symmetry should not be perfect. The most common solution is to displace the direction of the head or one of the arms to avoid an eff ect of total symmetry. The line of gravity spans the length of the figure from top to bottom, from the neck to the base of the supporting leg, on which the weight of the body rests. The Stability of the Figure The equilibrium of the pose is an important factor when drawing a figure.
As an European, this is puzzling to me. I also see in North America that there is often a confusion between nudity and sexuality. I was recently reading about a life drawing exhibition upsetting parents at a music festival on the Sunshine coast and was wondering why it was so important that children would not see life drawings. Just to be clear, I consider myself somewhat traditional and prude. But then, I find looking at a nude drawing to be entirely a different experience than looking at a real person. The nudity is somewhat abstracted, there is a distance and I can look at it, seeing the beauty in all shapes and ages of bodies.
Approaches[ edit ] Artists take a variety of approaches to drawing the human figure. They may draw from live models or from photographs, from skeletal models, or from memory and imagination. Most instruction focuses on the use of models in "life drawing" courses.
My girlfriend was in this same situation though. If they had a male model, I would have been very upset to learn that she was pressured to stare at the nude male body. Obviously it is possible to do this without feeling temptation, but I personally feel the nude body is something that should only be for your spouse. The thing that frustrated me most was that the art department at our university said there were no exceptions for religious reasons. There is a huge difference between seeing the painting of a nude and seeing a nude person in front of you.
